Hi I’m Boring

The title pretty much says it all. I’m boring right now. I’m not really complaining about that at the moment. It just is.

I’ve gotten even more boring over the past week or so. I’ve got a committee meeting tomorrow, so I’ve been spending time getting data to show off for that. That entailed a lot of working late and working weekends. This schedule did not leave time for too much else. (Aside: Unfortunately, that hasn’t really panned out. I’ve got data coming, but it won’t happen until after Monday. I’m not too upset about this. It’s just more data that I get to show them at my next meeting.)

Also, Advisor has now set a hard-ish deadline for me to give him a draft of my introduction to my dissertation. That deadline is the 14th of next month. I don’t think he’ll be too unhappy if I miss it, but I do feel like I need at least something to give him.

So, I don’t think this bout of boringness is going to stop any time soon. That means you’ll keep getting posts like this for a while.

Fortunately, your readers think this kind of post is interesting, since it's basically what we're all doing too. 🙂

Out of curiosity, what does your introduction entail? Mine is about 8 pages, largely taken from my prelim proposal, that just covers the main questions and knowledge gaps that are addressed in my research. Then each chapter has its own 2-5 page introduction to sets up the specific problem that motivated the study described in that chapter. Is yours similar, or a big honking lit review?

  2. Well, it's nice to see that I'm in good company. 🙂

My introduction is a full-out lit review. So, we're talking "Since the dawn of time, people have been interested in My Favorite Protein" type of thing. It's quite the endeavor, especially for an unwilling writer such as myself.

Sounds daunting. Will you be able to publish it?

  4. Just a little daunting. 🙂 And, no, probably not publishable. Well, I take that back, parts of it might be able to be published as a review.

At this point in my life boring is a good thing. It sounds like it will prove to be good for you as well. Good luck with the committee meeting.

I'm curious about the intro thing as well, since I may get to write mine soonish and have no idea… I'll be the first student of my boss to graduate, so there's no-one to ask for experience.

    Good luck with everything!

I'm boring also but I haven't posted on my blog in months. At least you are sharing!

  8. Pre-meeting data never comes through on time… at least for me.

Good luck with the lit review! My introduction was ridiculously long, covering two families of proteins. Luckily half of it was submitted as a reviews, so more than my committee and me might possibly read it someday.
