Why Birthdays Shouldn’t Be So Hyped

I’m back from vacation (I’ll post more about it later this week). Just in time for my birthday. This, in itself, is not so bad. I’m ready to be back at work and start the new semester. Plus, we always do a little party (with cake!) for birthdays.* However, this birthday not so great (nothing awful, just not fun). It’s just been a series of not-fun things that have happened all day. Such as my primers didn’t come in, got a parking ticket, and an Unbloggable. Also…

The Dixie Dog is sick. Yep, we got the dreaded phone call from the Kennel on Friday telling us that she had bloody vomit and diarrhea and could they please take her to the vet? My response, “Yes, please.” So, she spent this past weekend at the vet’s getting medicine and fluids. The Good News: She’s no longer vomiting, she was interested in playing (but not quite up to actually doing so) and was all about our rotisserie chicken last night (she had her bland, canned dog food, though– she still thinks that was cruel and unusual). The Bad News: She still has diarrhea, albeit non-bloody and non-explosive. I guess that’s still sort-of good news, as it’s an improvement over Friday. She’s still on medicine- an oral antibiotic and some stuff to stop the diarrhea. This means that we’re spending the evening in watching the Dixie Dog and generally indulging her in some extra intention. At least I don’t have to cook, we’re ordering in pizza.

So, all-in-all not that great. But things could always be worse, so I really shouldn’t complain. Mostly I’m just glad that Dixie Dog is doing better.

*I did get cake. And that covers a multitude of sins.

Sorry to hear about the not so good birthday and Dixie Dog's illness. I'm glad she's feeling better but know the worries won't go away until she's actually playing again. Hope that happens soon.

I somehow end up having not so fun birthdays too; it doesn't help that mine is in the winter and there is a 99% chance that I will be sick with flu or cold. Eh.

Sorry to hear about Dixie Dog – I hope she gets better soon! Then perhaps you can post-celebrate your birthday over the weekend by taking her out to the park or some other fun activity.

  3. Its hard to celebrate birthdays when you've had crappy day. It just means the next year of your life can only get better! (totally cheesy I know)

I'm so sorry about dixie dog. I hate it when my dogs got sick as they couldn't really tell me what is wrong. I hope she gets better soon.

    Happy birthday!

When dogs have 'rhea, can they still get outside or do they have lots of accidents?

I hope she gets better quickly and that you can have some birthday fun another day.

I'm so sorry to hear about the Dixie Dog…and all the other bad things that happen. I hope Dixie Dog is better soon, and I'm sure all the extra pampering she's getting is helping.

Hope you had a great vacation, and Happy Birthday!

  6. Hope the Dixie Dog fully recovers.
    And Happy Birthday!

  7. Amelie says:

I'm sorry about the not-so-happy birthday. Hope the Dixie Dog is better soon, and the rest of the not-great stuff as well.

  8. post-doc says:

Poor Dixie Dog – I'm happy she's recovering, but it's always worrisome when pets are ill. My guess is she appreciates the extra attention though – I think Chienne held on to her injury longer than necessary because she enjoyed the sympathy.

And at least there was cake. 🙂 Happy birthday.

  9. Happy birthday for yesterday! I hope today is going better for everyone, especially Dixie Dog.

  10. Aunt Becky says:

I'm sorry about Dixie Doggie! Poor sweet baby!

And I agree: my birthdays have been depressing since I turned…19? I'm over them. Not the getting older, but the celebrating of it all.

  11. Happy(?) birthday to you – I hope it gets better. Poor Dixie Dog!! That sounds just awful. I"m glad that she's on the mend.

  12. ScienceWoman says:

Happy belated birthday to you. My favorite birthday story (along the dixie dog lines): One year I took my birthday afternoon off to hang out with a friend, drink tea, talk. Nice. But then when I got home, I discovered that the Princess Pup had gotten into our cupboard and eaten a whole bag of chocolate chips and a whole bag of pecans and most of a second bag of chocolate chips. And had, of course, proceeded to get vomit and diarrhea all over the house. My husband was out of town, so of course it fell to me to clean up the mess.

So yes, I hate lading birthdays with false expectations for happiness.

I also recently had a birthday and wished that people would stop asking me what I was doing for my birthday(namely going to lab)… It just felt overall non-exciting. So Happy ignoring your birthday and hooray for cake!

  14. Silver Fox says:

Here's a way belated Happy Birthday to you (typical of my birthday greetings). I hope Dixie Dog is all better by now.

  15. Albatross says:

Hopefully it was really goooood cake to make up for the lackluster other things.

Hope Dixie Dog is all better by now!

  16. Mimi says:

    ah… I was wondering. I am glad you're back.
