Morality Tale

I had the opportunity to go to Public U.’s football game this past weekend. I like football, Dr. Man likes football. It was a win all around. We bundled up and headed to the game. The seats we had were so-so, while they were not up in the nosebleed section, they were not optimal for viewing the field. But they were in the stadium and that was what was important.

We arrived early to see the team take the field and watch the pre-game stuff. We took our seats and stood for the appropriate cheering (and booing) as was necessary. However, we refrained from standing on the seats, because that is (1) dangerous and (2) obstructs the view of the people standing behind us. Part way through the first quarter, a few (possibly partially intoxicated) young students came to sit in front of us. That was fine. Until they stood up on their seats. I politely asked them to step down so I could see (I’m short-ish and would prefer to be able to see the field, not their butts). They not-so-politely refused and told me (and I quote), “Get an officer, if you don’t like it.” Hence, I did.

The moral of the story: Do not mess with a grad student who has not seen the outside of a lab in four years.
Corollary: Do not make idle threats.
Secondary Corollary: Do not invite law enforcement officials to your seat, if you have been drinking illegally.

Woops for them! I guess they picked the wrong day to mess with the wrong person. I’m glad it worked out.

  2. Hahaha, I love it. Everyone should totally have that bad-ass bitchiness “don’t mess with me” streak. So many people are push-overs and would have just spent the rest of the game staring at their backsides. Good for you!

I, on the other hand, rather enjoyed my day of NFL football, from my couch, where nobody was in my way… except that nagging powerpoint presentation for my committee meeting this week. Darn.

  3. post-doc says:

You, my friend, are awesome. I would have wanted to do it, but probably would have walked off with my tail between my legs instead.

  4. Waw, well done! Hope you could properly enjoy the match after that.

  5. Ha, ha. That’s great. Hope you enjoyed the rest of the game. 😉

  6. ScienceGirl says:

Wait, is this the same blogger that just a few months ago was writing about having to get over the Southern niceness to be heard? That was quick 🙂 And yes, they asked for it!

  7. physicienne says:

    ohhhh snap! well played.

  8. Amanda says:

Silver Fox: Yep, the game was great!

EtBr: The stadium is just an experience that I can’t pass up. Even if the view from my couch would have been better.

Post-Doc: Thanks for thinking that I’m awesome. I probably wouldn’t have done it, if it wasn’t for being so frustrated all week.

Stepwise Girl and SGG: Definitely! I really enjoy cheering for our team.

Science Girl: Every so often we all just snap (I did feel somewhat bad afterwards. I told Dr. Man that I’m sure they’re nice boys who just forgot that they had to be polite on Game Day as well as during the week). Besides they did ask me to get an officer and I was just following their request. 🙂

Physicienne and Psych Post doc: I have to admit that I was pleased with the outcome and embarassment!

  9. Way to unleash your can of whoop-ass.

You are so hilarious. They totally deserved it!

I always do that do, where I do the right thing but then feel bad about it later. Good for you! I love this story.
And I’ve been that girl at a (rock) concert not wanting to sit in my seat and telling people where to shove it. So it all comes around I think.
