Adventures in Exercising

I’ve started exercising using the Wii Fit Plus (I’m not sure where the plus comes from). So far, so good. It’s interesting to use and the activities are short enough to where I don’t get bored. The last bit is very important because (for me) exercising indoors gets pretty boring and I get tired of doing the same thing over and over again. (Running outdoors is not the same because at least then the scenery changes and the Dixie Dog is an interesting running partner.) However, there are two things that I dislike (1) based on your weight it generates what it (the wii) thinks your body type must be and (2) when I don’t do well at some activity it shows my Mii (it’s an avatar you create) weeping. Trust me, while I may dislike being hit with a wrecking ball and thrown off the floating raft, I’m not spilling any tears here. I save those for crappy experiments.

(That’s not me in the picture. And this person is doing much better than I was earlier today!)

  1. Interesting! I had been curious about the Wii Fit. I just ellipticize with DVDs of last season's TV shows (we don't have cable hooked up). I'd find the weeping mildly discouraging but also kind of funny because of how disproportionate it seems to the situation 🙂

  2. I played with my in-laws' Wii over Christmas and really liked it. They don't have Wii Fit, but even playing the sports resort games (cycling, archery and canoeing were our favourites) gets you more active than if you're just sitting around reading or watching TV. I might try to find a used current generation Wii system whenever the second generation comes out!

I really like the idea of the Wii system, but I don't have adn don't want a TV – does that mean i can't get one?

  4. Brigindo says:

Well at least your having fun. I don't have one but a friend of mine said that as time goes on, if you're not exercising and gaining weight your Mii starts to get a beer belly and look all slouchy and tired. I'm not sure how I'd feel about that.

  5. Silver Fox says:

I haven't tried the Wii Fit, not sure I'd have room. Sounds interesting, though, better than an elliptical.

  6. Mad Hatter says:

I played with one at a friend's house. Some kind of ski jump game and I sucked at it. I didn't "jump" at the right time and ended up tumbling head-over-hills down the slope, turning into a giant snowball. My friend got a good laugh out of that, though!

  7. CT: We don't have any sort of "exercise equipment." But we already had a Wii. So, I asked for the Wii Fit for Christmas and just started it a few days ago. It's actually pretty cool… except for the weighing me bit. Now, that could have used some tears. 🙂

Cath: The sports is a lot of fun. That's what I figure. I'm not likely to run after work (too dark) or take a fitness class (logistics with Dr. Man and one car on campus), so this has to be better than nothing! Oh if you do get a Wii, we can race in Mario Kart against each other. 🙂

JaneB: Well, I think you can get one, but you'd have a hard time playing any of the games. 😉

Brigindo: That is pretty disturbing, but also motivation for me. I don't want my Mii gaining any more weight!

Silver Fox: It is pretty interesting. I haven't tried many of the cardio games, but the strength training and yoga is pretty good. I think the elliptical would be better cardio.

MH: Dr. Man watches me play and I think he enjoys it more than I do. I've done that many times. 🙂

  8. Aw, that weepy music makes me so sad! But it also makes me determined to try again and get the "calorie incinerator" music on the next go. I highly recommend the flying chicken game–you feel ridiculous because you are actually flapping your arms as if to fly, but it's challenging and can, at the harder levels, get your heart rate up. Sort of.

BTW–The "plus" is that it's the 2nd Wii Fit disc to come out. I've done both, and the WFP is much better than the original. Lots more fun games–so much that I ignore all the real "exercise" ones. Also, if you really have nothing else to do, you can make Miis for your pets. Seriously!

  9. Dr. Becca: It does sort of crack me up! And it makes Dr. Man laugh. I'll have to try the flying chicken game. I've not done a lot of the aerobic stuff yet. I end up playing a lot of the games, too. And Miis for your pets? Really?! Someone has too much time on their hands!
